We even have confirmation from Electronic Arts Corporate Archive that the only source they have for Sorcerer's Stone PC is retail source, eg: enough to rebuild the finished game, no prototypes. Sadly, after almost a whole year of contacting former developers and having lengthy dialogue, it doesn't appear that prototype source materials for the first-ever Potter game on the PC were kept and have been lost to history. Initially, we were after any pre-release or prototype source material for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone PC title. There is a current workflow in place with help from Gaming Alexandria - Dustin, the founder, aka Hubz - who has kindly agreed to assist in archival processing, as well as the LoC's video game preservation initiative out of their A/V Packard Campus facility for motion-picture film preservation. Apparently it's even easier if you get the (easily missable) poison been heading a digital preservation project for the early Harry Potter games, with a particular focus on the PC and Mac platforms (but we cover other platforms and obscure related media too!) We have had positive input from the Video Game History Foundation, Gaming Alexandria, and the US Library of Congress. Then there's major balance issues with paralysis spells on bosses - I took 0 damage against Voldemort and only 1HP damage from Quirrel before I was able to trivially stunlock them until they died.
Like you fight the same 4-5 enemy types, rats, frogs, bats mainly, but they've got palette swaps to indicate degrees of toughness and weaknesses but I was never able to consistently remember what colour had which weakness and often just had to randomly throw spells at them blindly and hope for the best. I think the lack of enemy variety and the poorly explained strategy with them is probably one of the biggest weaknesses.
Plus a few bugs I encountered other than the aforementioned gamebreaking one. A lot of mechanics aren't well explained, there's several missable, important things, you need to grind if you do things in certain orders, etc. The cart I bought had someone stuck on a gamebreaking bug on all 3 save files, which broke my heart because that's exactly where I got stuck as a kid and was never able to progress!īeing able to finish it was great, and while very cool I can definitely see rough edges as well. I recently finished the GBC Philosopher's Stone.
